A Very Fine George II Oak Bureau
The single piece fall front, with an applied moulded bookrest, enclosing an outstanding fitted interior of pigeon holes, small drawers and a secret compartment, all decorated with line inlay and carved decoration, set around a central well. Applied to the top rail is a carved walnut festooned scallop shell, which sits above two short and three long drawers, again all decorated with line inlay.
A very high quality piece of country furniture – probably the interpretation of a rural craftsman’s idea of a more sophisticated piece made in walnut.
English, circa 1740.
Width 35 inches, depth 20 inches, height 42 inches.
